RUBATO:  Many people have asked me, "What is rubato?"....................................................................................................................................................

Much of my music uses rubato which is an expressive way of interpreting music by varying from a strict rhythm or tempo by                             slowing down, or speeding up...or by lingering on or shortening a note(s) to convey a particular emotion, feeling or within a musical                            phrase.

MY MUSIC .......................is written in a  poetic, picturesque, very melodic, lyrical free form style with rich harmonies, is contemplative in nature.   My music has been influenced by classical composers of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionistic Periods, including their fondness for adapting the folk music of many peoples into their classical writing....and by the harmonies found in jazz.  For me, music is a way of telling about/contemplating life's journey, of seeking and learning... always with a sense of hope...the wondrous joy and beauty all around us...of all humanity.    One of my favorite activities is spending time in nature quietly listening to the conversation of the wind through the trees, birds singing, the murmur of a flowing river surrounded by the serenity of green trees/leaves/and grass, sprinkled with the many colours of flowers spreading their wonderful perfume in the air, the clouds above, the warmth of the sun, the refreshing rain.....the peace....................  J. Bhuyan

Hello MFP Friends!           THE ROLE OF IMPROVISATION...................................

I wanted to share with you the ideas and impressions of my colleague Jacqueline Tschabold Bhuyan, who is a virtuoso classical pianist and composer.  She has been working with me on our recent CD.  Here is what she has to say about the role of improvisation...............

"Ah yes!  the role of improvisation:  One thing that did come clearly to me at the very onset of becoming an improviser myself was such an immense feeling of freedom and exaltation, the deep immersion in the feeling of the music flowing from my hands, of soaring out into the universe, a universe with no boundaries...like taking a deep breath, opening one's mouth and just letting go in full, rich sound and voice.  Improvisation also invites adding little trill-like "in the moment" embellishments/they just slip in without thought..like little dances...All of improvisation is of course "in the moment" and even if I use the same key and basic chords on another day, I notice the difference in how they develop, the mood of the expressiveness that changes in a different moment...and that the music I create when improvising is somehow different than when composing...and here I cannot quite explain what I mean and feel........  So far I can create more complex harmonic changes and effects when I compose...Also I like using unexpected cadences that move to a I chord but from some chord other than the IV or V chord, even such as moving up or down a 1/2 step on one chord and then moving to the tonic.  I also discovered the pentatonic scale is great for improvising... I keep improvising every day now... want to get to point where can improvise more complex altered chords and unexpected key changes... I am starting to think this way some, and I know some day will be "in the moment" and it will just come to me..........."
